U.S. Congressman. Born near Darlington, South Carolina, he attended the South Carolina Military Academy and served in the Confederate Army throughout the Civil War. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1872 and practiced law in Darlington, South Carolina. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives in 1877 and solicitor of the fourth judicial circuit of South Carolina, in 1880. In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1891. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 57 in Darlington, South Carolina.
