Mary Lincoln, was born in Buffalo township of Marquette county, Wisconsin, in 1860, the daughter of William L. Lincoln and Charlotte A. (Hoit). In 1868, her father moved his family back to her grandfather's farm near Union Grove. She went to Chicago after the death of her father in 1875, to live with the family of her uncle, David H. Lincoln, who had a successful business as a commision merchant. There she married William Phelps in 1881, and they had two sons, Erastus R. Phelps and Royal L. Phelps. Mr. Phelps was a lithographer and had his own business. They later moved to Manhatten, New York, where Mr. Phelps died in 1923. She returned to live in Chicago until her death in 1934.
