Born Jan. 22, 1913, in Westville, a son of John and Ethel Nokes Avery, he attended Westville area schools. He married Eveline Premo on Oct. 8, 1932, in Notre Dame Church, Malone, with the Rev. Lawrence Mallette officiating. Mrs. Avery died July 10, 1990.
Mr. Avery retired in 1969 from Aluminum Company of America, Massena, where he had worked for more than 25 years. He also worked for several years as a lineman for Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. in Malone.
Mr. Avery, formerly of Fort Covington and Malone, enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
Surviving are a son, Donald, Fort Covington; a daughter, Mrs. J. Lucien (Eleanor) Latulippe, Fort Covington; seven sisters, Anna Avery, Edna Peno and Marjorie Reynolds, all of Malone, Mrs. Ernest (Ruth) Marlow, Brushton, Grace Griffin, Westville, Mrs. Jay (Freida) Capstraw, Syracuse, and Flora Ceretto, Fonda; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Two brothers, Lawrence and Alton Avery; three half brothers, Stanley, Julius and Clarence Avery; two sisters, Lillian Nicklaw and Wilma Freer, and a half sister, Viola Green, died before him.
A funeral Mass will be said at noon Monday at Our Lady of Fatima Church with the Rev. Garry Giroux officiating. Burial will be in St. Augustine's Cemetery, North Bangor.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Cappiello-McKenzie and Cosgrove Funeral Home, Fort Covington.
Donations may be made to the Westville or Fort Covington volunteer fire and rescue departments.
