Author. She was a 20th-century German-born author whose life was seriously impacted by the rise of the Nazi Party with their leader Adolph Hitler and his anti-Semitism agenda. Born Hildegard Löwenstein, the daughter of an affluent Jewish lawyer, she was educated at Heidelberg University, Cologne University, University of Bonn, and the Humboldt University of Berlin. She initially studied law and later specialized in economics, social sciences, and philosophy. After earning her Ph.D. in Florence, Italy in 1935, she began to teach at college-level courses. She and Erwin Walter Palm were married in 1936. In 1932 she fled to Italy, and with much difficulty gaining a visa, the couple escaped to England, United States, and finally, to República Dominicana, living there for nearly 13 years. During her last years there, she overcame the grief of the loss of her mother and a miscarriage by writing under the pseudonym Hilde Domin. Among her collection of poems are "Nur Eine Rose Als Stütze" in 1959, "Rückkehr der Schiffe" in 1962, "Hier" in 1964, and "Ich Will Dich" in 1970. Besides her poetry, she wrote one novel, a host of short stories, and literary-scientific essays. Her work has been translated into more than 21 languages, and her autobiography was published in 1974. In 2023 posthumously, "With My Shadow: The Poems of Hilde Domin" was published. In 1954, she and her husband returned to West Germany to find that most of her in-laws had perished during World War II at the hands of the Nazi Forces. Domin lived in Heidelberg from 1961 until her death. She became a widow in 1988. She died from complications after a fall. Among her many accolades was the 1983 Nelly Sachs Prize, which was named after her close Jewish friend and 1966 Nobel Prize in Literature recipient, Nelly Sachs. In 2005, she was awarded the Orden al Mérito de Duarte for the government of the República Dominicana.
