Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Cotacachi, Carlos Guillermo Honorato Echeverría Ruiz entered the Franciscan Order in 1928, receiving the name Bernardino. Ordained priest in July 1937, he was sent to Rome to further his studies at the Pontifical Antonian Athenaeum, earning a doctorate in philosophy in 1941. Back in Ecuador, he lectured in various Franciscan houses of study, while he was soon serving the offices of prefect of studies, provincial commissary of the Franciscan tertiaries, rector of the brotherhood of Quito, provincial secretary, and minister provincial. Founder of the Communion of the Sick, of the Jodoco Ricke publishing house, of the 'Paz y Bien' journal and of the San Andrés school, Fray Bernardino served furthermore as secretary of the Ecuadoran Institute of Amazonian Studies. Named member of the International Academy of Franciscan History, at the early age of thirty six he was appointed the first bishop of the newly erected diocese of Ambato, receiving his episcopal consecration on December 4, 1949 in Quito. Named president of the Junta de Reconstrucción for the province of Tungurahua by the Ecuadoran government following its earthquake devastation, he founded in the 'Bruderhilfe für Ekuador' in Münich, for the assistance of dioceses in Ecuador. Secretary general of the Episcopal Conference of Ecuador, he was promoted to the metropolitan see of Guayaquil on April 10, 1969, an office which he held until his retirement in December 1989. Pope John Paul II created him cardinal priest in the consistory of November 26, 1994 with the title of Ss. Nereo ed Achilleo in recognition to all his humanitarian activities. A renowned literary figure, known for his poems, essays and historical texts, the Cardinal authored the famous 'Himno a Quito'.
