Educator, intellectual, philosopher, lawyer, sociologist, and independence advocate. He studied in the Liceo de San Juan and then his parents sent him to Spain to finish High School. Hostos attended the University of Madrid and while studying law and philosophy he became interested in politics. Hostos wrote several articles in newspapers from Madrid and Cataluña. Later on he moved to the United States and joined the Cuban Revolutionary Committee. One of the things which frustrated Hostos was that in Puerto Rico and in Cuba there were many folks who wanted their liberation from Spain, but did not embrace the idea of becoming revolutionaries. Hostos promoted the independence of Puerto Rico and Cuba in several countries, such as United States, France, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and the former Danish colony of St. Thomas. While in Peru, Hostos assisted in the development of that country's educational system and spoke against the severe treatment given to the Chinese who lived there. In Chile he taught at the university level and spoke about the scientific education of women. While in Dominican Republic he founded a Normal School or Teachers’ College. In 1876 he traveled to Venezuela, married his wife, and returned to Dominican Republic for the inauguration of a second Normal School in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros. There are school buildings in Cayey, San Juan and Trujillo Alto that bear his name. Street that honor his legacy are in the towns of Aguada, Cabo Rojo, Guayama, Juana Díaz, Mayagüez, San Germán, San Juan, and Vega Baja. The country of Chile has a Liceo Eugenio María de Hostos and the city of Madrid a Colegio Público Eugenio María de Hostos. As per his wishes his remains will stay in Santo Domingo until the island of Puerto Rico is politically independent. He is known as "El gran ciudadano de las Américas".
