Then he came back to the big leagues in 1920 and helped the Cleveland Indians win the American League pennant by going 7-0 with a 1.85 earned run average in nine games. He completed six of eight starts as Cleveland beat the scandal-ridden Chicago White Sox by two games and New York by three. With Cleveland ahead three games to two against Brooklyn in the best-of-nine World Series, Indians manager Tris Speaker turned to Mails, who responded with a thre-hit, 1-0 victory. In all, he pitched 15 2/3 innings of scoreless ball as the Indians took the title. He was 14-8 in 1921 and slipped to 4-7 the following year. After a two-year absence from the big leagues, he was with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1925-26. He had a 32-25 lifetime record.
