Born as the middle son of John William Crook (1870-1901) and Nancy Florence Adamson Crook (1870-1910) in Scottsboro, Tennessee (Davidson county). Fatherless at 5 years old and an orphan at 14 years, Matthew started working at The American Tobacco Company as a tobacco roller while learning to play music. Matthew and his younger brother Herman formed the "Crook Brothers Band" and performed on what was called "The Saturday Night Barn Dance" in 1926 and became "The Grand Ole Opry"in 1927. Herman performed on the Opry for 62 years but Matthew left the band after several years and became a Nashville policeman.

Matthew was married to Bessie A. Gunter but their marriage produced no children and ended in separation.
