Thelma Marie Litchfield was born September 2, 1928 in Orlando, Florida to parents Charles Cramer and Ella Mae Curtis Cramer.

Her father was from New York and her mother from Nashville, Tennessee -- with the old home place of “Curtis Hill” not far from here located in Bordeaux, Tennessee.

Marie married Orville Wilbur Litchfield on March 3, 1951. They met while attending Florida Conference Campmeeting services in Forest City, Florida. Orville was in the army, and following his honorable discharge, they moved to Davenport, Iowa where he enrolled in Chiropractic School. They lived and worked in Perry and Orlando, Florida.

Orville and Marie have two surviving children: Donald Andrew Litchfield and Myrna Marie Litchfield Closser. Don is married to Pat Hodgkins Litchfield and they have two daughters and three sons – Tricia Dewar who is married to Raymond; and Tammie Klingbeil who is married to David; Shane Litchfield, Shawn Litchfield, and Jim Litchfield. Myrna is married to Jim Closser and they have one son Jimmy. She has five (5) great-grandchildren. Marie had three siblings including two brothers Glen Cramer, Curtis Cramer, and one sister, Lilly Cramer Fullerton.

Marie was a firm advocate of Seventh-day Adventist Christian education. After her family moved to Miami, Florida where her dad owned and ran a service station, there was not good access to an SDA School, and therefore, she attended public school. It was not until her junior year in high school that she was able to attend an SDA School. After much pleading with her parents, they finally consented and permitted her to go live with her aunt and uncle where she was able to attend Forest Lake Academy. She helped fund her education while working at the school’s laundry. Following graduation, she attended and graduated from Southern Missionary College (now Southern Adventist University) with an associate degree in secretarial science.

Her career included work in her first job as secretary in the education department of the Florida Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Following marriage she continued her duties at the conference office, but soon began serving alongside her husband as office manager of a growing chiropractic office and raising their two children.

Marie was most happy serving others. She lived to serve. It was her joy. That included school functions for her children, band outings and events, church cooking programs, prayer conferences, and more. She was a volunteer chaplain at Tennessee Christian Medical Center for many years where she would regularly visit patients and pray with them. She too enjoyed sewing and crocheting – but again, her real joy came from helping others.

In 1991, a tragic accident involving an 18-wheeler, a farm tractor, and car, claimed the life of her husband Orville and nearly took Marie’s life. But she was a fighter. However, this accident began a long series of events which took a toll on her including major trauma from the accident, head injury, stroke, and a bout with colon cancer followed by chemotherapy.

It was 4 years ago this past March that she suffered a significant stroke -- with multiple events thereafter -- which she has battled these many years. Through all of her daily nausea and discomfort, she never complained. She was a joy to help because she was so appreciative. She enjoyed the many visits, cards, and letters shared by family, friends, school students, and others. She and the family are thankful for the wonderful caregivers these past four years including Clara Hansen, Bernice Johnson, Susan Blystone, and Angela Beard, and the teams of providers from Alive Hospice, Aspire, and Home Instead.

Marie was surrounded by the strains of hymns – as sung by her family Monday evening – as she went to sleep with the confidence of Jesus as her Friend, Helper, Redeemer, Savior, and Risen Lord. Her wish would be that you know Him too – and share in the blessed hope found in God’s Holy Word.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Ceremony will be conducted Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at 3:30PM at the Madison Campus Seventh-day Adventist Church with Pastors Byron Corbett, Julie Vega, and Ignacio Silverio officiating.

Burial will be in the Historic Spring Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Spring Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery.
