Her second husband was Abner Jefferson Nichols. They married in 1862. They had 6 children, but I believe only 2 lived to adulthood, Jeff and Janie.

By 1871, Caroline was living with her sister in Texas, due to illness. On Jan 25, 1877 Caroline was admitted to the Austin State Mental Hospital. Her diagnosis was "Acute Mania due to childbirth". She spent the rest of her life there.
