He was married to Lily Langtry (The Jersey Lily). She was the lover of Edward, The Prince of Wales (later to become Edward VII). He had been travelling from Cork to London. At Crewe he had been discovered wandering ‘bruised and dazed’ around Crewe railway station. Previous to this, he had apparently sustained an injury during his voyage from Ireland. He said he had fallen down a companion ladder and had badly hurt himself. The following day he was found to be still wandering around in a delirious state and was taken before the magistrate. Dr Bailey, a magistrate, after examining him, gave a certificate for his removal to Chester lunatic asylum in Upton. He died nine days later on the 15th October 1897 (according to his death certificate) aged 50 yrs. The cause was inflammation of the brain. He was buried on the 19th October 1897. Mrs Langtry sent a beautiful wreath of lilies of the valley and violets, tied with purple ribbon.
