Clemence Earle was born in Birmingham, Alabama, where her father was serving as superintendent of Loveman, Joseph and Loeb, a leading Birmingham department store.

Never married, Clemence was a long time member of the so-called Plymouth Brethren (open). She dedicated her life to the fundamental Christian walk working for the American Board of Missions to the Jews in New York City; additionally, she gave most of her income away in furtherance of spreading the Christian gospel message.

Later she worked as a legal secretary at a law firm in East Orange, NJ, where her formidable typing skills (said to exceed 130 WPM with no mistakes) were employed.

After Clemence retired, she often traveled to Mexico to assist in certain Christian endeavors there. She enjoyed good success at that because she was very proficient in the use of the Spanish language.

Clemence had deeply held feelings about all manner of matters. One example was her aversion to having her picture taken because of the Biblical prohibition against "graven images". As a result, photos of her are somewhat rare.

Although they never married, Clemence was the long time platonic companion of Alfred Clifton Roe (born 03-12-1877 at Felton, Kent Delaware; died 05-1970 at East Orange, NJ). They would travel to areas of destitution where gospel tracts would be distributed and informal gospel hall meetings would be held. They were interested in leading folks to Christ.

After her death, a review of checking account records in First Fidelity Bank told the tale of how she furthered her efforts to spread “The Word”: Clemence had made out checks to (among others) Viriato Dias Sobral, (her favorite ministry @ $200/month) World Messianic Fellowship, Beth Israel Ministries, Source of Light Schools (Georgia), and the Alpha and Omega Ministries of Newark (New Jersey).

At the time of her death, Clemence was a resident at the historical Baptist Home for the Aged at 285 Roseville Avenue, Newark, N.J.

Interestingly, her spinster aunt Rosona Suarez (similarly single) had been a resident at the same place prior to her own death seventy years earlier... on January 31, 1925. Matter of fact, Rosona, too, is buried in Rosedale Cemetery (Maple Knoll section, Lot #133).

Clemence’s death certificate incorrectly stated her name as CLENE EARLE which must have originated with a hospital worker in the East Orange General Hospital where she died at 04:05 (AM) on the 4th floor - West Wing... her name was corrected officially on the reverse side of the death certificate a few weeks later

Clemence had purchased her own grave on April 12th, 1977 for the cost of $200. Deed #9631 describes the grave as 35 square feet, 3 1/2 ' x 10'

Her funeral consisted of a graveside service officiated by the Rev. Frank J. Kolk, Jr., Administrator (with his wife Marjorie "Marge") of The Baptist Home for the Aged. Formerly, he was the pastor of “The Little Church on the Mountain”… Greenwood Baptist Church, founded in 1884, is located in Hewitt, New Jersey. Early in his career (1956), Frank Kolk was briefly the Pastor of a Baptist church in Greenfield, Massachusetts.

A simple grave marker was placed in 2001 after amalgamated assistance from several family members - each of whom knows who they are.
