Susan graduated from Marlborough High School, Los Angeles, in 1950, and from Glendale College in Glendale, Calif. in 1952. She moved to Marinette in 1954 and was a homemaker until 1970. She had worked in the Marinette School District as a teacher's aide, and then at the Menominee Herald-Leader as the editor of the Action and the Community Page.
In 1980, she began working as the Rainbow House's Executive Director, retiring June 1, 1998.
On July 27, 2002, Susan married Kenneth "Nick" Smith; he died May 23, 2006.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and Life Member of the Marinette Jaycettes. She was also a member of the AFS, of which she served as president for many years, and was a host mother of Andrew from Australia and Anders from Sweden. She had raised and showed dogs for 30 years.
Susan is survived by two sons: Mark (Julie) Nygren and John (Maggie) Nygren;
two daughters: Susan (Mitzi) and Karla;
a daughter-in-law, Dyanne;
a brother, David of Gig Harbor, Wash.;
14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren;
and dear friend, Carla and her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert Jr. and a great-grandson, Brayden.
Visitation will be held at Faith Lutheran Church on Wednesday, September 24th from 4 to 6 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 6 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Teeple officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery {???}
