In August of 1940, William entered active service at Omaha, Nebraska, He was a private in the 169 Infantry, 43 Infantry Division, and was sent overseas to the Pacific theater on September 5, 1944. His parents last heard from him in November of 1944, when he wrote that he "was well and getting along fine."
Private First Class William Franklin Flying Horse was killed in action at Luzon, Philippines, on March 19, 1945.
