Esther Sacchelli was the sixth born child of Hungarian émigrés, Alexander Balla (1886-1950) and Julia Molnar (1885-1962); and she was the first of their children to have been born in Texas, where they moved after leaving New York. She was the beloved sister of Alex Balla Jr., Ima (Balla) Creech, Frank Balla, John Balla, Irene (Balla) Sebok, Arpod Balla, Henry Balla, Aline (Balla) Goetz, and Ethel Jewel (Balla) Elmer.
Much of her early life was spent in Sabine and Jasper counties of Texas. She eventually came to California, where her sister Irene had been living with her husband. She, like her sister, worked at a resort. It was there that she met Mario Sacchelli (1914-2006), an Italian émigré. Esther and Mario were married on the 16 April 1941 in California. During World War II, Mario served in the Army, while Esther stayed with some of her siblings and/or parents.
After the war, Mario became a bartender, and eventually opened a bartending school. Although she always wanted to be a mother and have children, should could not have children of her own and they never adopted. This would be a source of pain for the rest of her life. After Mario retired, they bought some land in Temecula, California, where they lived for many years. They eventually sold their land and moved into a retirement home in Santa Ana, California. It was there that she suffered from a stroke that required her to remain in the hospital. She passed away on the 15 December 1998, after suffering another stroke.
She was cremated, and was buried in Riverside National Cemetery. Her husband, Mario, followed her in death eight years later. He was buried with her in Riverside National Cemetery.
