Professional Hockey Player. For seven seasons (1951 to 1957 and 1958 to 1959), he played at the right-wing position in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers and Chicago Black Hawks. Born Walter Edgar Hergesheimer, he lost parts of two fingers on his right hand, the result of a punch-press accident. In addition, he had the stature of five feet, eight inches and weighted at barely one-hundred and fifty pounds. The odds were clearly against him for a successful career in the sport. However, after eight seasons in with several leagues, he earned the American Hockey League's Rookie of the Year honors, when he totaled 83 points with the Cleveland Barons. He marked his NHL debut with the Rangers during the 1951-1952 season and scored 26 goals in 68 games. The following year (1952-1953), he produced a career-high 30 goals. In 351 regular season NHL games, he compiled 114 goals with 85 assists. He achieved all-star status twice (1953 and 1956) and during the 1953 NHL All-Star Game, he earned a place in the record books, when he scored two goals in two minutes. During the course of his playing career, he was dubbed "The Garbage Collector" because of his ability for deflect rebounding pucks into the opponent's net. His older brother Phil Hergesheimer was also a player in the NHL.
