Earl "Gene" Berger
Oklahoma City
Gene Berger Sr., 78, passed away in OKC on Wednesday Oct. 1, 2014. Gene was born in Wilson County, Kansas, on August 30, 1936, to Charley and Lena (Butner) Berger. He was raised in Fredonia, Kansas, where he owned and operated a service station in his younger years. Gene retired from the FAA as a safety inspector and instructor, but before that, he was a charter pilot. Even after retirement, he continued to work part time, and was a security guard at a gated community in OKC at the time of his death. He never met a stranger and always remembered everyone's name that he met. He loved to help people and was always working with his hands, especially doing woodwork. Gene was active in his church his entire life and was an elder and adult Sunday School Teacher at Peniel Missionary Baptist Church at the time of his death. He was also active in CMA (Christian Motorcyclists Association) and LOCO. He loved trains, planes and motorcycles, but his greatest earthly love was his wife, Pat. He was often heard saying, "My last day on this earth will be my graduation to life everlasting." Gene is survived by his wife of 30 years, Pat Berger; two sons, Earl Gene Berger, Jr. and wife Shirley, of Forrest Park, OK; and Rodney Berger and wife Waynetta, of Grand Junction, CO; two daughters, Lori and Doug Borton, of Hutchinson, KS; and Judy and John Hilyard, Tecumseh, KS; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; one brother, Larry Berger and wife Gayla, of Perry, OK; and a host of other loving family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Leroy "Bub" Berger. A memorial service to celebrate Gene's life will be held at Peniel Missionary Baptist Church at 6600 NW 30th St., Bethany, OK, on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at 1 p.m. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to CMA, Frontier Hospice, or Peniel Missionary Baptist Church. Arrangements are through John M. Ireland Funeral Home, Moore, OK.
