PEORIA - Shirley J. Brewer, 71, of 215 E. Ravine died at 3:50 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004, at her residence.

Born Jan. 30, 1933, in Havana to Raymond M. and Della Mae Leonard Wilson, she married Dale Akridge. He died March 18, 1961, in Peoria.

She later married Virgil R. Brewer on April 4, 1967, in Peoria. He survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Marcia (and Jodie) Marcy of Eureka, Kathy Akridge of Agora Hills, Calif., Karen (and John) Backes of Washington and Sally Akridge of Peoria; one stepson, Steven of Peoria; one sister, Nora Collins of Springfield; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two stepsons, Mark and Stan, and three brothers.

She worked for First National Bank of Peoria for many years and later for Commerce Bank in Peoria until retiring in 1995.

She was a member of the AMVETS Auxiliary.

She was a charter member of Mothers of Twins Club and helped teach Dale Carnegie courses.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wilton Mortuary. The Rev. Howard Love will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the mortuary. Cremation will be accorded. Burial of ashes will be at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Community Workshop and Training Center or to Child Welfare Program at AMVETS.
