He married Cresilla Burton February 15th, 1779 in Frederick County, Maryland.

He was the father of six children : Mary, Nancy, Joseph, Charles, John, and Richard.

He was the brother of John Adamson Berkshire.

On August 5th, 1776, he joined Captain Philip Maroney's Company of the Flying Camp out of Frederick County, Maryland.

Originally he bought 100 acres of property in Rowan County, North Carolina. He sold those 100 acres in 1804 and moved to the new territory of Indiana. He purchased 160 acres in present day Floyd County, Indiana on April 27th, 1807. He purchased an additional 160 acres adjacent on June 29th, 1814.
