Motion Picture Director. He was born in Lille and died in Paris (France). He is one of the most important film-makers in the history of French cinema. His film making career spanned nearly half a century and comprises 67 films. From 1938 to the final of Second World War, he was forced to exile and worked in Hollywood. He is remembered for his films Poil de Carotte (1925 and the remake in 1932), Le Mystère de la Tour Eiffel (1927), David Golder (1933), Pepe Le Moko (1937), Un Carnet de Bal (1937), La Fin du Jour (1939), Tales of Manhattan (1942), Flesh and Fantasy (1943), Panique (1946), Sous Le Ciel de Paris (1951), Le Petit Monde de Don Camillo (1952), Pot-Bouille (1957), La Femme et le Pantin (1959) and Diaboliquement Vôtre (1968). He died in a car accident, after suffering a heart attack while driving.
