George served as a Union Soldier during the Civil War. He enlisted on July 25, 1862 in Company A, 89th Illinois Regiment. He received a disability discharge in Nashville Tennessee on February 13, 1863. When he enlisted he was a widower working as a carpenter in Kane County Illinois. He is listed as a carpenter on later years census'. He married again to Belle (1854-1921).
