Pioneer founder of Butler's Point, IL, later renamed Catlin.
He had good business sense and prospered, building a large hewn log home that replaced the smaller cabin. A large oak tree on his property was called "Butler's Lone Tree", providing a landmark for those crossing the prairie. He was one of the first County Commissioners, the first 2 meetings being held in his home. He was Vermilion County's first farmer, and built the first grist mill in the area, a corn cracker. He continued to farm his land until his death.

There appears to be a mistake on the inscription on the stone marking the burial place of James D. Butler and his wife Polly. The stone lists James Lewis Butler, James D.'s son, and his wife Maria. This is also noted in several documents of record in Vermilion County.
