Artist. He was considered by many to be the greatest master of collage. At the Berlin Akademie, he started his own specific flavor of Dadaism, which he called Merz (allegedly from the name Commerz Bank.) Between 1923 and 1932 he published a magazine "Merz", and he performed regular Merz-evenings in his home. He became a friend of Hausmann, Hans Arp, Otto Dix and other dadaists. As a poet he became known of his poem "Anna Blume" (1919). In 1936 he followed his son, Ernst into exile in Norway. From 1940 he lived in London. He died of a stroke in Ambleside, England.
