Death of Mrs. C.H. Backus

Mrs. Jane Backus, wife of C.H. Backus, living at 0123 Michigan Avenue, died this morning at four o'clock, following an illness of only a few days with pleurisy and heart trouble.

Mr. and Mrs. Backus are among Winfield's most estimable residents and have lived here since 1898. They came to Kansas in the early 70's from Virginia, and made their home in Cowley county. Only three other married couples had lived here as long as Mr. and Mrs. Backus.

Mrs. Backus was born March 27, 1846, and at the time of her death was 71 years of age.

The sorrowing relatives left to mourn he loss are the husband, two sons, Thomas Backus, proprietor of the Backus Hardware and Mell Backus, pharmacist at the Plagmann & Doane's drug store, and two daughters, Mrs. Anna Baker of Latham, and Miss Mary Backus at home.

The funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock from the residence, in charge of the Rev. W.B. Lampe, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, of which Mrs. Backus has been a devout member for many years.
