William Martin "Willie" Staggs was born on May 20, 1900 in Maury County, Tennessee, the son of William J Staggs and Orleanor (McMillen) Staggs.

He was married on February 19/20, 1937 in Franklin, Kentucky, as the 1st husband of Madeline "Sophia" Benzenhafer (1905-1978), the daughter of Johann "Christopher" Benzenhafer Sr (1857-1930) and Emma (Linck) Benzenhafer (1875-1934). {There is confusion on the marriage date in February 1937, because the Marriage Announcement in The Tennessean on Sunday, February 21, 1937 states that the marriage took place on Saturday, February 19. However, Saturday was the 20th, not the 19th.} Sophia was married 2nd to Percy Pettey ( -1961).

An "end matcher" for a flour company, Willie was living at 933 Thomas Avenue, Nashville and 41 years old when he died of heart problems on March 15, 1942 at Nashville's Vanderbilt University Hospital where he had been for 6 hours. Burial was two days later in Spring Hill Cemetery, Madison.

Most of the above is from his Death Certificate, with Mrs Willie M Staggs of 933 Thomas Avenue, Nashville as the informant.
