British Navy Admiral. Born Francis William Austen the fifth of six brothers born to the Reverend William George Austen and his wife, Cassandra Leigh. He was the younger brother of Jane Austen. He entered the Royal Naval Academy at Portsmouth at age twelve. His career took him to the far east from age 14 to 18 and later the Indies. In October 1805 he missed involvement in the battle of Trafalgar due to his temporary detachment from Lord Nelson's fleet for convoy duty as captain of a captured French ship, Canopus. Nelson considered him to have been "an excellent young man." His career has long been considered the inspiration for Lieutenant William Price in his sister's novels "Mansfield Park," and Captain Wentworth in "Persuasion." He and his first wife, Mary Gibson, had eleven children together before her death in 1823. He remarried family friend, Martha Lloyd, in 1828. He was made a knight and eventfully rose to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet. He died at age 91, the last surviving Austen sibling, and was buried at the Wymering Parish Church, Portmouth.
