At the age of 16 she went to The World's Fair in Chicago and pitched for a women's fast pitch softball team. She was so proud of the key to the city of Chicago she received. In Minnesota, she worked as a hairstylist and worked in the big woods alongside Merle as a lumberjack. She fed the deer every day and would sit at her kitchen window watching all the animals and birds pass through her yard. (Excerpt from Obituary published in the Dayton Daily News, October 19, 2014)
