Johann Daniel Zittel may be a son of Maria Margaretha and Andreas Zittel, baptized on 5 August 1736 in Marnheim, now in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate state.

Daniel Zittel and Susanna Dorothea Ritzer were married on 29 July 1768 in Göllheim, now in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate state. According to the marriage record, Daniel was the son of Andreas Zittel.

The couple had three sons baptized in Göllheim. Church records show both their mother's maiden name and their father's name.

• Johann Michael, 22 April 1769
• Johann Conrad, 17 November 1770
• Johann Daniel, 25 July 1773

The Zittel family immigrated to America on the Sally, arriving on 31 October 1774 in Philadelphia. Daniel Zittel is on the ship's passenger list, and swore the oath of allegiance, becoming a British subject. The family settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

According to Zittle family oral tradition collected by Elizabeth Jayne Blair and Leona Miller Hart, the father of Michael Zittle, senior, died at sea—possibly on a return trip to Germany.

These two dedicated researchers proposed that the parents of the three Zittle brothers—Michael, Conrad, Daniel—might be named Daniel and Susanna, since each of the three named a son Daniel and daughter Susan/Susanna. They also proposed that the Daniel Zittel on the 1774 passenger list was the three brothers' father. German church record translations, available later, provide confirmation.
