Johann Conrad Zittel — known as Conrad Zittle — was the son of Susanna Dorothea (née Ritzer) and Daniel Zittel, born in or near Göllheim, now in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate state. The Zittle family emigrated in 1774 from Germany to America, landed in Philadelphia, and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Conrad Zittle in 1803 purchased land as a speculator in the Town of Porter, Niagara County, New York. He settled there later, and was in 1815 an overseer of the poor and a poundkeeper, and in 1819 an overseer of the poor and a commissioner of highways.

Conrad Zittle and Asenath Tucker were married on 7 April 1823 in Youngstown, a village in the Town of Porter. Aseneth (née Roberts) was the widow of Stephen Tucker, junior. Conrad and Asenath had two children—

• Daniel Zittle (1824 – 1849)
• Susanna Zittle McCollum (1826 – 1885)

Conrad Zittle died at Zittle's Corner (now officially Porter Center, in the Town of Porter, but still called Zittle Corner by locals). His widow Asenath moved to Iowa with the family of Lois Hatt (née Tucker), her daughter from her first marriage. Asenath died in 1855 in Keosauqua, Van Buren County, Iowa.
