He began playing professionally in 1917 for Wichita of the Western League and had a big season there in 1920, when he hit .357 and led the league with 41 homers. He played five years in Birmingham of the Southern Association, hitting .369, .336, .389, .335 and .340 from 1926 to 1930. He didn't play from 1933 to 1935 but came back to play five more years in the lower minors.
