Luzene Reed was born 1897 in Jackson County, North Carolina. She married Jasper Queen, also of Jackson County, NC on May 18, 1920 in Ocona Lufty Twp., Swain, North Carolina. In 1930 the US census shows the family living in Qualla township. At least ten children resulted from the union. A possible eleventh child, Corie Queen, age 5, appeared on the 1930 census between Eva and Minnie, but not the 1940 census; further historical data is lacking at the moment.

Luzene R. Queen's first name is also shown spelled as Luzena, Luzine, Luzive, Luzeene, Luceud, Lugene, Lugena, and Louzere in accessible records.

Year of birth cited above is from the NC Eastern Cherokee Census 1915-1922 taken June 30, 1918 by James E. Henderson. At that time, Luzene Reed was shown to be a step-daughter to Jesse Washington.

We are seeking confirmation of her final resting place. Her family members are interred in the following cemeteries:

Littlejohn Family Cemetery
Queen Cemetery
Washington Family Cemetery
Wolf Family Cemetery
Yellow Hill Veteran Cemetery
Washington Cemetery at Jenkins Creek
Powell Cemetery

We are also seeking confirmation of the final resting place of her son, Blaine Queen, recipient of the Silver Star, who was killed in action during WWII. It is interesting that a historical reference cites her husband's (Jasper) interment as Jenkins Creek Cemetery; however, I am told that no cemetery by that name exists. The cemetery was also cited on their son's (Blaine) application for a marker. Perhaps this is merely a local reference to a cemetery. Jasper is reportedly interred in Queen Cemetery.

Another consideration comes from the memorial page for Levi Adams Oocumma, who was Blaine Queen's nephew. It states that burial will be at Washington Cemetery at Jenkins Creek. Levi's memorial page gives his interment as Drama Cemetery AKA Copper Cemetery and AKA Washington Creek Cemetery. Perhaps you, the reader of this page, will seek to find and photo the markers for all of us!
