Bristol, Va, Jan 28. - Sheriff W M Newland, who had charge of Ack Hale, the noted prisoner, who is charged with having murdered Lillie Davis, of Bristol, died suddenly Sunday. He had been busy making preparations for the trial, which was due to begin yesterday, until he became ill a few days ago. His death was due to acute stomach trouble and enlargement of the liver.

Sheriff Newland was about 60 years old. He had been a strong man all his life, and the decline in his health came unexpectedly...

Sheriff Newland served two years in the civil war, having been a Confederate soldier. His wife and several children survive. His body was taken to the old home near Arcadia yesterday for burial.
