Major League Baseball Player. Born Herbert Eugene Plews, he played collegiate baseball at the University of Illinois and was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1950. Following service with the United States Army during the Korean War, he marked his Major League debut with Washington on April 18, 1956. Mainly a second baseman, he produced a career-high 98 hits with the Senators in 1958. He was acquired by the Boston Red Sox during the 1959 season and retired from baseball following that year. In 346 regular season MLB games, he compiled 266 hits with a .262 lifetime batting average. He went on to work at a cement plant in Colorado. Plews died from natural causes.
