Businessman. When his brother, William Colgate, started his business in New York City in 1806, he mostly sold starch soap and candles from his factory and shop. William formed partners with Francis Smith in his second year of the company, and the firm became Smith and Colgate, a name it retained until 1812, when William purchased Smith's share of the business and offered Bowles a partnership. William Colgate & Company was the business name from 1813 to 1844. The company relocated its manufacturing operations to Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1820. After both of the Colgate brothers died in 1857, their children took over the business under the new name, Colgate & Company.
