Born Cesar Leonard Perez Tovar in Caracas, Venezuela, he was signed as an amateur free agent by the Cincinnati Reds in 1959. He ended up with the Twins' organization and broke into the Major Leagues with them on April 12th, 1965, appearing in 18 games that year with the Minnesota team that captured the American League Pennant.
