Author. Swedish writer, born in Swan River, Manitoba, Canada, as his family were immigrants. In 1935, when he was four years old, the family returned to Sweden. He made his debute with the novel "Eremitkräftan" 1962, but his breakthrough book was "Prästkappan", published the year after, in 1963. He was brought up in a rural environment, which very much affected his writing. His writing was retrospective towards the old peasant life of Sweden, as well as dealing with the great issues of life. He had a vast production throughout his career, and some of his noted books are further "Åminne" (1970), "Kära farmor" (1979), "Speranza" (1980), "Samuels bok" (1981), "Kaanans land" (1984) and "Livets ax" (1991). His last book was "Agnar", and was published in 1993. His novel "Åminne" became a popular TV-series - "Hedebyborna" (1978) with himself as screenwriter. He combined his authorship with being a professor (Docent) in Literature History at the University of Uppsala, and as a visiting professor at Berkeley University in California. He received several distiguished literature awards. Cause of death: Cancer.
