John Furman Haley was born August 14, 1897 to the marriage of John Alva and Julia Evetts Haley.

He married Florence Trent on December 1, 1924 in Monahans, Texas. In 1926 they moved to the Haley Ranch in Winkler County, Texas.

The Haley family began ranching in Loving County, Texas in 1915 and gradually expanded the ranching operation into Winkler County, Texas. Except for service in the U.S. Army and some time working in the oilfields as a young man, John Furman Haley spent his entire life as a cowboy and a rancher. After John's death on February 16, 1972, his son, John Arthur Haley wrote, 'Windmills, Drouths and Cottonseed Cake', a book about the life of John Furman Haley.
