Obituary:

MURRAY, Raymond E., 85, of Clearwater, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, December 7, 2014, following a battle with cancer. He was born on November 18, 1929 in Verona, Pennsylvania, to Oscar H. and Margaret (Ritter) Murray. Ray moved with his family to Tampa, Florida, in 1934. He left home to live on his own at the age of 13, sleeping in a bunk at the back of his father's auto parts business. Ray operated a bicycle repair and auto body shop while completing his education at Hillsborough High School in 1948. He married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Corbett, in 1951. After serving in the Merchant Marines, he continued his career as an entrepreneur and owned over 30 different businesses during his career. Those interests included: Murray Boat Trailers, travel trailers, software, machining, outdoor pool tables, telecommunication equipment, NASA contracts, and many more. He credited his business success to the people he worked with and was grateful to each of them. His lifelong hobbies included: piloting his plane, boating, sculpting, carving and travel. Ray and Nancy loved spending time in the Bahamas and the mountains of North Carolina. Ray's spiritual journey began when he accepted Christ as his savior at the age of 38, after reading the book World Aflame, a prophetic work by evangelist, Billy Graham, which he would encourage everyone to read. As his business career grew, his faith and desire to help others grew as well. Ray encouraged and mentored countless others in their faith and personal relationship with God. Ray also faithfully supported many philanthropic efforts locally and around the world, providing support to numerous missionaries for over 30 years. Ray and Nancy also supported the arts and the needs of youth in their community. Ray served for many years on the boards of Trinity College (New Port Richey) and Toccoa Falls College (Toccoa, GA). From the Florida Orchestra and Ruth Eckerd Hall, to Abe Brown's prison ministry, Family First, the Florida Holocaust Museum, and youth addiction programs, Ray's desire to help others was his life's mission. When encountering life's challenges, he did not ask God "why," he asked God "what." Ray loved God, life, and his fellow man. He is survived by Nancy C. Murray, his wife of 63 years; son Michael (Joy) of Tampa; son Steve (Susan) of Tampa; and daughter Terri Pereira (Ken) of Safety Harbor; as well as grandchildren: Stephany Murphy (Jeff), Raymond Pereira, Shannon Vinueza (Jose), Ryan Murray (Shannon), Lindsay Peragine (Dan), Reed Murray, and Taylor Murray; and great grandchildren: Dylan, Jude, Remy, Tessa, Haley, Savannah, and Ryder. A private graveside service for immediate family has been held. A memorial service for friends and family will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Calvary Baptist Church, 110 N. McMullen Booth Rd, Clearwater, FL 33759. In lieu of flowers, remembrance donations may be made to Trinity College Ray Murray Memorial Fund at trinitycollege.edu/contact-us/general-donation, or Abe Brown Prison Ministries at abebrown.org/donations.shtml.
