Spc. David J. Brangman of Lake Worth, Florida attended Forest Hill High School and was home schooled, then entered the Army in February 2003, one month before the U.S. invasion of Iraq. He joined partly to earn money to go to college. He loved to draw and dreamed of being an architect. He and his family moved from Albany, N.Y., in 1999 and were profoundly affected by the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. He wanted to do something for his country and that's what he did. He was intelligent and well-mannered, and his family had never seen him more proud than when he showed up at his mothers' workplace in uniform. He died in Uvanni, Iraq, when a mortar round struck his vehicle. He had just turned 20.
