Edward Stokes Bishop was born on 15 Jan 1876, in Dinwiddie County, Va, the son of John Anthony Bishop
and Lucy Edward (Davis) Bishop (both originally from Lunenburg County, Va).

While giving birth to triplets, Lucy and two of the babies died. Edward was the only baby to survive.

His grandparents Alfred and Mary Bishop moved to Dinwiddie in order to help raise Edward and his older brother John.

Eddie lost his father, at age 11, in June 1887, and his grandfather in 1895.

Edward married Lula Bruce Elder in 1896. Lula Bruce was the daughter of Hattie Thomas (Dyson) Elder and Charles Edward Elder.

Eddie and Lula Bruce honored the memory of Edward's father and grandfather by naming their first son: John Alfred Bishop. Eddie and Lula Bruce's other children were also named for ancestors: Lucy Thomas Bishop, Mary Gee Bishop, Gary Lee Bishop (died in infancy), Roy Edward Bishop, Ashton Coles Bishop, George Cabell Bishop, Nellie Grey Bishop, Ruby Ray Bishop (died in infancy), and Audrey Bruce Bishop.

Edward was a farmer in Dinwiddie County all his life. When his eldest son John Alfred Bishop died in January 1941, (the result of an accident), it took a heavy toll on Edward and he died two months later, on 10 Mar 1941.
