Specialist David Lee Rice, 22, of Sioux City died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, in Iraq. He gave the ultimate sacrifice during combat operations supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Services at Long Lines Rec. Center in Sioux City, with the Rev. Roger D. Graf of Morningside Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial in Logan Park Cemetery, with military rites. Memorials services were held on April 30 in Iraq. A memorial service will be today at Fort Riley, Kan.

David was born on January 24, 1983, in Sioux City, the son of David Albert and Laurinda Marie (Maslonka) Rice. He attended school and graduated from East High School in 2001. He entered the military four weeks after graduation.

He received his basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and his Airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was then moved to Camp Ederly, Italy, and served with the 173rd Airborne. He entered Iraq with the 173rd in March 2003, stationed in the northern part of the country with the Kurds.

In January 2004, he returned to Italy and in February moved back to the United States. He received the Army Commendation Medal for his first tour in Iraq. In March 2004, he was attached to Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division in Fort Riley, Kansas, and in 2005 returned to Iraq. His last time home was over Christmas, where he celebrated with family and friends. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service in Iraq in 2005.

He was a member of Morningside Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed fishing and accompanied his grandfather on several fishing trips over the years including northern Minnesota. He was a member of the Boy Scouts, where he earned the Life Scout Award. He excelled in wrestling and won several championships. He also wore number 59 for the East High Raiders as a defensive tackle. He enjoyed hunting, NASCAR racing and video games. He knew how to have fun and was a loving brother and good friend.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Laurinda and Mel Finken of Sioux City; his father, David Albert Rice of Oregon; two sisters, Maggie Mae Rice and Stevie Nicole Rice, both of Sioux City; three stepbrothers, Mark Finken and his wife, Jen of Overland Park, Kansas, Chad Finken of Chicago, Illinoi, and Brian Finken and his wife, Jessica of Sioux City; a stepsister, Alicia Finken of California; maternal grandparents, Ralph and Eleanor Maslonka of Dakota City; paternal grandparents, Kay Rice and Doug Dimick of Sioux City; uncle and his wife, Brad and Carla Maslonka of Prior Lake, Minnesota; and aunt and her husband, Julie and Tim Konidas of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, David J. "Tiny" Rice, and an uncle, David Maslonka.David Rice (1983 - 2005)
