Wililam M. Story, 67, Dies; Mining, Business Leader

William MacArthur Story, 67, 2051 E. 9th South, well known in mining, construction, ranching and many other business fields throughout Utah, died of natural causes Sunday in a Salt Lake hospital.

Besides operating his own milling, mining and construction firms, he worked for years for various mining, smelting and construction companies.

For several years he worked as a geologist in the Utah Department of Highways in the materials and test division, retiring in 1969.

He also was active in civic and Boy Scouts of America work.

He was born Nov. 14, 1904, in Ouray, Colo., a son of William and Florence MacArthur Story Jr. He moved to Salt Lake City with his parents in 1914.

Mr. Story attended East High School and Lake Forest Academy, Ill. He graduated in 1927 with a degree in geology from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., and from Stanford Business School in 1929.

He married Catharine Nutter on Nov. 28, 1939, in Salt Lake City. She died March 27, 1966.

He was employed for many years as a mining engineer and geologist for Utah Construction Co., Park City Consolidated Mines Internatonal Smelting and Refining Co. and a number of other firms.

He then entered business for himself and was president of H.M. & S. Milling Co.; partner in Matthews and Story Milling and Mining Co.; and partner in Hokanson and Story Construction Co., all of Salt Lake City.

Mr. Story was on the board of directors of the Unitah Basin Irrigation Co. and a former member of the board of directors of Miller Flora Corp.

He was a member of the Ambassador Athletic Club and a former member of the University Club.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. E. Ross (Katherine) Register, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Thomas B. (Virginia) Anderson, Price; two sisters, Mrs. Marian Story Goeltz and Mrs. Allison L. (Eleanor) Nowels, both Salt Lake City, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Wednesday noon at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, 231 E. 1st South. Rosary will be at 574 E. 1st South, Tuesday at 8 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
