Mary Elizabeth (Yancey) Pope Davis, 92, of Oakley, Calif. died Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at home after a short illness. Mary Elizabeth was born in Belltown, Pa. on Feb. 28, 1917. She was preceded in death by her parents Edward Solomon Yancey Sr. and Minnie Smith Yancey; husbands Ernest T. Pope and Lima Davis. Brothers and sisters Clarence R., W. Stanley, Edward S. Jr., James R., Gladys E. and Ruth E. (Yancey) Pringle and two brothers-in-law Henry Wallace and Alan Pringle. She is survived by Paul L. Yancey & wife Rosetta, Somerset, and Helen M. (Yancey) Wallace, St. Louis, Mo. The following sisters-in law: Alma (Ed) Yancey, Joyce (Stanley) Yancey, Mary (James) Yancey and Sylvia (Clarence) Yancey. She is also survived by the following children: Evelyn Pope Pickett (Gilbert), Sterling, Va.; Richard Pope, El Sobrante, Calif.; Eddie Davis (Lunita Boyden), San Jose, Calif.; Linda Earls (Andrew, Jr.), Oakley, Calif. and Marlin Davis, Oakley, Calif. She leaves eight grandchildren: Roberta Pickett, James Pickett, of Sterling, Va.; Debbie (Pickett) and Chester Wilburn, Romeoville, Ill.; Andrew, III and Tanya Earls, Brentwood, Calif.; Eric and Sophia Earls, Antelope, Calif. and Chris Earls, Oakley, Calif. She also had nine great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews. She made friends wherever she went. Her family moved from Belltown to Somerset. She is a graduate from Somerset High School. Mary Elizabeth worked for many years at Somerset County Hand Laundry, founded by her father. The second half of her life was lived in the Richmond, Calif. area. She and husband, Lima moved to Calif. in 1966 along with their children Richard, Eddie, Linda and Marlin. Before taking disability retirement she worked for Model Laundry in El Sobrante, Calif. Mary Elizabeth attended Rock of Ages Baptist Church, Richmond, Calif., and later Barrett Avenue Christian Church, Richmond, Calif., and was an Eastern Star in Unity Chapter 15 O. E. S. She served as Worthy Matron for Unity Chapter and held many offices. Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSPV) was another organization she worked with while serving as secretary and being on the RSPV Advisory Council. She loved and helped care for her grandchildren and great-granddaughter for many years. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend. She will truly be missed. “Her children arise and call her blessed; Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
