BUCKFIELD -- Frederick John Greenwood, 73, of Buckfield, died Sunday, July 1, 2007, at Maine Medical Center.
He was born March 16, 1934, the third of nine children, to Forrest and Doris (Stanley) Greenwood. He was raised in Wales where he attended grammar school and graduated from Monmouth Academy in 1952. He married Merlene Thomas, his wife and partner of 54 years, in November of 1953. He began working as a truck driver for Cottrell & Gray Lumber Company of Monmouth and later for B & E Motor Express of Auburn.
In 1960, he and his wife bought a farm in Buckfield where they have resided for the past 47 years.
Early in the 1960s they purchased a piece of land on Route 4 in Turner where they retailed fresh apples and vegetables. Over the years it expanded to include a larger retail building, an apple packing plant, cold storage and an apple cider mill. Greenwood Orchards is still a thriving family business.
In the 1970s, a new dairy barn was built and a registered herd of Jersey cows were introduced to the Buckfield farm. Fred and his wife also enjoyed raising, training and racing Standardbred horses at area tracks and fairs, where they met some wonderful people.
Fred was an active member in the community. He belonged to the SAD 39 School Board through the 1960s and '70s, as well as a member of the Buckfield Appeals Board, the Budget Committee in 1979 and Selectman in 1974. Fred was very involved within the area farming community as a member of the Maine Apple Growers, the Maine Farm Bureau and the Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation. He was also a member of the Maine Harness Horseman's Association, the Maine Standardbred Association and the U.S. Trotting Association. Since 1960, Fred had been a Mason within the #101 Nezinscot Lodge.
He enjoyed life, family, friends, his farm and his dog Maggie. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren and supported them through all their endeavors.
He is survived by his wife, Merlene Greenwood of Buckfield; a son, Fred A. Greenwood and his wife Rebekah of Hebron; three daughters, Kathryn King and her husband Neal of Turner, Peggy Holland and her husband Tom of Buckfield and Cynthia Scott and her husband Glen of Buckfield; four brothers, Frank Greenwood of Jay, James Greenwood of Auburn, George Greenwood of Poland and Robert Greenwood of Greene; three sisters, Caroline Chick of Sabattus, Linda Karod of Camden and Jean Greenwood of Jefferson; 14 grandchildren, Laura Hughes and husband Zachary, Carolyn Kennison and husband Chris, Aubrie Greenwood, Lt. USCGR Harold F. King, Lt. USANG Richard H. King, Katie King, Jennifer Lowell-Hussey and husband Todd, Thomas Lowell, Lindsay Henderson, Jason, Dawn and Darci Holland, Chelsey Boucher, Cassie Violette and husband PFC Scott S. Violette; four great-grandchildren Payton Lowell, Reilly Hussey, Mallory Kennison and Kelsey Violette. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Stanley Greenwood.
