NORFOLK, Neb. — A private memorial is planned in the spring for Catharine Carson Sotzing, who died last week at the age of 90 in Fullerton, California. The older sister of the late Johnny Carson, Catharine “Kit” Carson grew up in Norfolk and graduated from Norfolk High School. Catharine Carson Sotzing, also known as Cam, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Nov. 24. Born in December 1923 in Shenandoah, Iowa, she was the oldest child of Ruth and Homer Carson of Columbus, Neb. She was the sister of television personality Johnny Carson and television director Richard Carson. In 1944 she married Ralph Franklin Sotzing of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, who was working as a United Airlines DC3 pilot in Denver. She was the love of his life and he was the love of hers. His zest for life and her razorsharp wit made them fun people to be around, friends said. Catharine attended the University of Nebraska. She had a passion for reading and laughter, which she shared with her brothers frequently. Her sense of humor was an inspiration for her brothers. Catharine and Ralph raised three sons in the Philadelphia area. She worked as a medical secretary, taught stopsmoking classes and managed tennis clubs with Ralph - and they even tried their hand at the bedandbreakfast business, running the Gosby House in Pacific Grove, California. In 1993 Kit and Ralph retired to Rogue Valley Manor in Medford, Oregon, where they made many new friends and enjoyed retirement for more than 20 years. She moved to Fullerton in 2012. She is survived by her brother Richard; her three sons, Steve Sotzing of Old Greenwich, Connecticut, Michael Sotzing of Kent, Washington, and Jeffrey Sotzing of Fullerton; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society.
A private memorial is planned for the spring of 2015 in Pacific Grove.
