Sam served as a Sergeant and Mechanic with the ground support crew, 412th Bomber Squadron, 95th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Niagara County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on April 24, 1942 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in packing, filling, labeling, marking, and bottling and also as Married.

Sam was "Killed In Action" at the Alconbury Royal Air Force Base in England along with 18 other airmen when, while loading B-17F (#42-29685), one of the 500 lb bombs exploded and caused a chain reaction of other explosions.

The explosions killed 19 airmen, severly injured 20 others, damaged 11 B-17's, and totally destroyed 2 others. The two B-17's destroyed were #42-29685 & #42-29706.

He was originally interred in England and was later repatriated here in 1948.
