Joseph Strong served as Bugler in Company I. and as Chief Bugler on the staff of the 7th Illinois Cavalry in the Civil War.

He enlisted at Decatur, IL., on Sep 3, 1861, for 3 years, giving his age as 23. He was described as a married musician 5' 7" tall with auburn hair, blue eyes, and a light complexion. He was mustered in as Bugler of Company I. at Camp Butler, IL. He was subsequently appointed Chief Bugler of the Regiment.

He married Virginia Ella Lemen on July 26, 1860 in Decatur, IL.

On Nov 9, 1895 he received an Army Invalid Pension.

When he died on Jan 21, 1901, his death certificate stated he was 52 years old, born in Ohio, he was married, and an employee of the Rail Road. He was buried at Oakwoods Cemetery on Jan 24, 1901.

At the time of his death Joseph was a proud member of Post #444. Grand Army of the Republic in Englewood, Chicago, IL.
