James Frederick Craft is the son of Benjamin Craft and Sarah "Sally" Becker. He was in the 22nd Virginia Infantry Co "K" under the command of Lt. Col. J. C. McDonald.

He is the brother of Catherine "Kate", George, Benjamin "Richard", John Spencer, Mariah Frances, Susan, Sarah, Jacob, and Margaret Craft.

He married Martha Ann Caldwell on September 16, 1847 in Botetourt County, Virginia. They had the following children: James William, Jane, Mariah, Hugh Nicholas, Mary Margaret, Clifton Garland "Tut", John, Amanda Virginia, Fannie Susan, Miles Thomas, and Melissa R. Craft.

Death date was obtained from widow's pension application.
