Mike T. Sonoda of Fallbrook, California was never one to mug for the camera. After he died the only photos of him that his family could find were his baby pictures or ones with his eyes closed. But his eyes were wide open when it came to seeing the purpose of serving in Iraq with the Army National Guard. Mike was a very caring and giving person, inquisitive and dedicated. When he was home on leave, he told his family not to worry about him, that he wanted to serve and do his duty. He felt that we were making a difference in Iraq, especially with the young people. He was quiet and proud of being a soldier and especially proud of his Italian jump wings, which he earned as a paratrooper while on active duty in Vicenza, Italy. Except for a visit home in May, Sonoda had been in Iraq since January. In 2001, he served in Kuwait for six months. In his civilian life, Sonoda was a hazardous-materials inspector for the U.S. Postal Service. He had graduated from Fallbrook High School in 1989. He was posthumously receive the Bronze Star and Purple Heart and was promoted to sergeant after his death. Survivors include his parents, Takeshi and Emiko Sonoda and sister, Irene Sonoda. He was 34.
