North Carolina Governor. Born in Bladen County, North Carolina, he attended the University of North Carolina, served as its Trustee and became a leading figure in state and national politics. He served in the House of Commons (1812-14), as a North Carolina State Senator (1819-20, 1827-28) and on the Council of State, (1824-27). In 1828, General Assembly elected him the 24th Governor of North Carolina, serving until 1829. As governor, he improved the workforce of the state’s economy, championed primary public schooling, internal improvements and the popular election of sheriffs. After his term, he remained an important public figure until his death at age 54 in Chatham County, North Carolina.
